Hey Zack, is great to see you around here!
We have considered it indeed, it would be a great solution! but the fact is that currently we have a 6 pole connection, and it might grow in the production release
zaalexander Why did the team decided to go with wired vs. wireless? Is there a plan to move towards wireless in the future?
Our main goal with this first stage of the development is to make a suit as affordable as possible. Going wireless right now would add complexity, raising the costs. You might argue that the components to add wireless capabilities doesn't cost much, which is true. But there's also to consider the enlargement of the codebase, the complexity added to development and debugging, the addition of a very unpredictable variable to the user support, and many other little complications (take a look at the price difference between wired and wireless suits from current commercial mocap suits providers).
Not to say that we want our suits working flawlessly on live performance scenarios. On that kind of situations the wireless communications require extra precautions.
So at the moment the good old reliable cables seem to be the best option. Even if as you pointed out the current design is at the limit of what's physically possible. The idea is to work on that problem once the beta testing period is over, perhaps converting the signals to differential pairs (and so the necessity of more pins on the connector).
With that said, we would love to make a wireless version in the future, or perhaps someone on the community starts thinking on it 😉
zaalexander Something like this could work as well. Surface mount, low profile (3.7mm) and right-angle
Another good option, and the pre-crimped wires would work fine. But I'm not sure it stands the number of mating cycles a mocap suit would go through during its lifetime.
