keep in mind that apart from the hardware redesign also the software implementation should be modified. The software in charge of the sensor reading is the Notochord. It is the older software piece in the chordata framework and it's currently going thought a comprehensive re-writting process. It was originally created when the chordata system was a much smaller project, and many additions were made to it during the years, resulting in a hard to maintain codebase.
So, if you want to give it a try it would be a great contribution. Just keep in mind that you might find some inconsistencies in the code style and architecture of the program while you code.
What IMU are you planning to use? I would advise you to get a breakout board of that one and start by implementing the software side. I'd be glad to guide you in the process.
